Sunny
Sunny was small, bright, and sang with the sunshine—my first pet and my little secret-keeper.
Sunny was my first ever pet. Mummy got him for me when I turned six. He was yellow like the sun, that’s why I named him Sunny. He was very small and very loud. He used to sing when I opened the curtains. Not every morning, only when the sun was out. It was like magic. I told him my secrets. I think he listened, because he’d tilt his head like he was thinking. He liked cucumber best. He didn’t like carrot. I tried to give him some but he spat it out and made a silly face. That made me laugh lots. One day, he didn’t sing. I thought maybe he was tired. But the next day, he was still quiet. Daddy said he’d gone to sleep and wouldn’t wake up. I cried a lot. We buried him in a little box in the garden and planted daffodils. Mummy says they’re yellow like him and they’ll bloom every spring to say hello. I still look at the sky and wonder if he’s flying around up there. I hope there’s lots of cucumber in bird heaven. Bye-bye Sunny. You were the best singer in the world.
