Shelldon was our quiet constant for over twenty years—a steady, gentle soul who grounded our home.
Shelldon was, without exaggeration, the most dependable presence in our home for over twenty years. He arrived in a small cardboard box, no larger than a teacup and left us as a fully grown red-eared slider, respected and adored. While many may overlook turtles as “low maintenance,” Shelldon was a constant and dignified companion. He required daily care, temperature regulation, balanced diet, periodic tank cleaning and it was in this routine that we bonded. He did not interact the way other pets might, but there was a calming intelligence in his movements. The slow lift of his head when I approached the tank, the stillness as he basked in the warmth of his lamp, it conveyed trust. His passing was quiet. Expected, perhaps, but still heavy. I found him in his usual spot, resting under the rock, but this time he didn’t stir. We buried him in the garden, under the rosemary bush. A stone marker stands above him. Shelldon taught my children responsibility, patience and quiet appreciation. A good turtle. A steady friend. He will be missed and fondly remembered.
